Tumbling Compost Bin

How to make a tumbling compost bin using an empty barrel or from buckets

  • Source a clean barrel or a large plastic bucket (that hasn’t contained poisons)

  • Make a simple timber frame using off cuts of timber

  • Paint if the timber is not treated for longer life

  • Place the barrel on top of the timber frame using a piece of piping (Photo 1)  or secure the bucket with a cross pipe (Photo 2)

  • Drill holes in cross bar/plastic pipe for aeration, if making a bucket composting bin (Photo 2)

  • Put all your food scraps into the barrel or bucket daily and also mix in garden waste, torn up paper, leaves and/or cardboard.

  • Turn tumbling compost bin regularly which will accelerate the decomposition process.

  • When the compost is ready empty and dig into your garden
