Compost Bin

How to make a compost bin from off cuts of timber

  • Make a 4 sided timber frame with a groove in the two front upright pieces of timber. Leo at CReW used donated timber that already had grooves in them. Alternatively if you don’t have a grooved piece of timber, use 2 pieces of timber instead.

  • Cut timber planks to length and nail onto frame on 3 sides leaving front open

  • Make a slat lid which can be lifted off

  • Cut slats to size and stack one on top of the other on front of composting bin

  • Paint or leave natural

  • Simply take out as many or as few of the front slats when turning compost or emptying

  • Feel free to come and check out the measurements of the one portrayed here that CReW team member, Leo made, which is situated in the Sustainable Gardening Hub of Pou Whakaaro/CReW
